The purpose of Asana practice.

Patanjali defines asanas as “Sthiram sukham asanam” or a stable, comfortable position. Patanjali believed that the purpose of asana is to develop the ability to sit comfortably in one position for a long period of time, which is a prerequisite for meditation. They say that to master an asana we must be able to remain in this pose for at least three hours.
In classical literature on Hatha Yoga (Goal which is to prepare the student for Raja Yoga / Patanjali) it is said that when we perform certain asanas, energy channels and psychic centers open. By developing control over the body through these practices it is possible to control the mind and energy. Asanas are tools for higher awareness, providing the necessary basis for exploring the body, mind and higher states.
Let's put this classic knowledge into a modern context.
We know that the mind and body are not separate entities, even though there is a tendency to think and act as if they exist. The practice of asanas unites and harmonizes them. There is tension in both the mind and body. Every mental tension has a corresponding physical tension, and vice versa. Asanas relieve this tension.
A well-chosen set of asanas combined with pranayama, Shatkarmas, meditation and yoga nidra are effective in eliminating tension on both the mental and physical levels. It releases dormant energy, gives vitality to the body, peace and tranquility to the mind, and increases confidence in all areas of life. If you help the body through the practice of asanas, you can correct many emotional disorders of the mind. For example, practicing asanas that affect the digestive system will help relieve anger and anxiety.
It is for this reason that Asana plays such an important role in yoga practice. The purpose of asana practice is to influence, integrate and harmonize all levels of being or kosha - physical, pranic, mental, emotional, psychic and spiritual. Asanas have a profound effect on all levels of being if you practice asanas consciously.
Awareness of Anamaya Kosha - to eliminate physical blocks, such as stiffness in muscles or joints, as well as to work with various organs and organ systems.
